Frequency of Positive Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) Testing for Borrelia burgdorferi on Whole Blood Samples That Tested Positive for Babesia microti by PCR from an Endemic Area for Both Infections in New York State

چکیده
Because both Babesia microti and Borrelia burgdorferi can be transmitted by the bite of a single coinfected Ixodes scapularis tick, an attempt was made to determine frequency with which whole blood samples that tested positive for B. infection polymerase chain reaction (PCR) would also test PCR infection. Over 7-year period from 2013 2019, 119 different patients on at least one sample. Among 118 sample could qualitative burgdorferi, only patient (0.85%, 95% CI 0.02 4.6%). Routine testing every PCR-positive specimen detect coinfection appears have low yield, even in highly endemic geographic area these infections.

Emerging incidence of Lyme borreliosis, babesiosis, bartonellosis, and granulocytic ehrlichiosis in Australia
BACKGROUND Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease (LD), and Babesia, Bartonella, and Ehrlichia species (spp.) are recognized tick-borne pathogens in humans worldwide. Using serology and molecular testing, the incidence of these pathogens was investigated in symptomatic patients from Australia. METHODS Sera were analyzed by an immunofluorescent antibody assay (IFA) followed ...
متن کاملPolymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a powerful and widely used technique that has greatly advanced our ability to analyze genes. Genomic deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) present in cells contains many thousands of genes. This makes it difficult to isolate and analyze any individual gene. PCR allows specific DNA sequences, usually corresponding to genes or parts of genes, to be copied from genomic...
متن کاملBabesia microti, Upstate New York
Five cases of human babesiosis were reported in the Lower Hudson Valley Region of New York State in 2001. An investigation to determine if Babesia microti was present in local Ixodes scapularis ticks yielded 5 positive pools in 123 pools tested, the first detection of B. microti from field-collected I. scapularis in upstate New York.
متن کاملDetection of Borrelia burgdorferi DNA by the polymerase chain reaction.
DNA amplification by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to detect DNA of the Lyme disease spirochaete Borrelia burgdorferi. Primers that specify the amplification of a 145 basepair DNA fragment of the OspA gene of B. burgdorferi were used. The amplification product was detected by gel electrophoresis and ethidium bromide staining or by hybridization to a radiolabelled oligonucleotide ...
متن کاملDiagnosis of pneumococcal pneumonia by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in whole blood: a prospective clinical study.
BACKGROUND Streptococcus pneumoniae is the leading cause of community acquired pneumonia; however, only a small proportion of cases can be detected by conventional methods. The ability of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test performed on whole blood samples to identify patients with pneumococcal pneumonia was investigated. METHODS One hundred and fourteen consecutive adult patients with c...
